The Date!!!--September 4th--Distance Learning
Session--1PM to 5PM
Dear FADCP Members--Due to
the current budget situation that has impacted the court
system, the FADCP Board voted to transform the September
3-4, 2008 statewide drug court training conference into a
distance learning session. With the current travel
restrictions in place for all court employees, the Board
believed it was best to postpone the conference until the
financial situation in our state improves. To this end, the FADCP and
the Office of the State Courts Administrator (OSCA) are
developing a distance learning session to be held on
Thursday, September 4th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm ET. A memo
has been sent to the chief judges and court administrators
asking them for their support and to provide feedback on how
many drug court teams will participate.
Judges and other drug
court team members will have the ability to earn much needed
CJE’s CLE’s and CUE’s for this training event.
The Seventeenth Judicial
Circuit will host the event. The session will feature Dr.
Andrew Osborne who is a national expert in cultural
proficiency in drug courts. He will focus on structuring
sanctions and incentives in a culturally proficient way to
meet the diverse needs of clients in drug court. In
addition, modules on cultural proficiency will be
presented. It is anticipated that the session will be
presented through the court’s videoconferencing network. The
session will be interactive, which will enable participants
to pose questions via e-mail.
In addition, the Ninth
Judicial Circuit is planning a morning session on
September 4th from 9:15-11:00 am that may be webcast for
circuits to observe covering the impact of substance
abuse on the courts,
drug testing issues, drug court basics, addiction and a
drug jeopardy competition.
We will send out more
information as we finalize details. If you have any
questions, please contact Eve at 904-280-4143 or
Jennifer Grandal with the OSCA at 850-922-5101 or
grandalj@flcourts.org.
Thanks!!!
Florida Drug Courts "Live Long and Prosper"
by M. May
On April 26-27, 2007, the Florida Association of Drug Court Professionals, Florida Office of the State Courts Administrator (OSCA), and the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit coordinated Florida’s (7th) state-wide training conference at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando. Our theme: Drug Courts – The Next Generation -- emphasized the future of Florida’s drug court system. In doing so, Florida joins the efforts of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals in taking drug courts to scale. Preceding the conference, a specialized training session was held for Florida’s drug court coordinators.
The conference focused on meaningful educational programs that directly enhance and support the duties and responsibilities of Florida’s drug court teams. National experts like Dr. Timothy Condon, Carolyn Hardin, Dr. Doug Marlowe, Paul Cary, Gloria Cronin, and Dr. Susan Yeres were on hand to cover topics of neuroscience of brain addiction, funding, the 10 key components, sanctions and incentives, drug testing, dependency drug court principles, and juvenile drug court best practices. Our Florida experts presented critical topics identified by drug court teams such as co-occurring disorders, evidence-based treatment practices, and emerging trends in drug abuse. Over 350 drug court professionals attended, our largest conference ever. Florida is targeting October 2008 for the next statewide training forum.
