Thank You Message from the 2008 NADCP Conference

Due to the budget crunch in 2008, only a few from Florida were able to attend the national conference.  It is unfortunate that drug courts originated in Florida almost twenty years ago, but so few Floridians were able to see and hear this moving thank you message during the opening session.

If you are a drug court professional that is feeling tired, underpaid, overworked or unappreciated, please listen to this!

Thank you message from 2008 NADCP Conference (mp3 / 16 MB / 108 minutes)

After Florida pioneered drug courts in 1989, other states and countries saw the value in the movement and started their own drug court programs.  Today, there are more than 2,000 drug courts.  Even though the research continues, the science is clear:

  • Drug courts reduce crime

  • Drug courts cost less than incarceration and are more effective

  • Drug courts keep participants in treatment for significant durations

  • Drug courts reduce drug use

  • Drug courts save lives and restore communities

  • Treatment works

  • Drug Courts Work!

As the twentieth anniversary of drug courts draw near (2009), Florida should be in the vanguard of taking drug courts to scale instead of pleading to remain in existence.  Let's hope the wise in Florida are able to keep drug courts viable through very difficult financial times.
